There are many terms used to describe ways in which animals can help people with special needs and mental health issues. These include 'animal therapy,' 'pet facilitated therapy,' or 'animal-assisted therapy'.

Animals can help people with a variety of mental, emotional, and physical disabilities by allowing someone who is normally a receiver of  care to be the giver of care and feel needed, responsible and important.

They allow us to show responsibility. We learn to be gentle, follow instructions and gain the basics of keeping themselves, others and the animals safe.

We have seen our people benefit hugely when forming a relationship with animals Animals are great listeners- they dont interrupt, they do not feel obligated to share their opinions and they are interested in any variety of topics that people may find strange or boring!

There are many reasons why physical activity is good for your body – weight control and physical health, a healthy heart and supple joints are just the bodily effects.

Physical activity is also good for your mental health. Exercise releases chemicals in your brain that make you feel good. Regular exercise can also boost your self-esteem and help you concentrate, sleep, look and feel better.

As well as releasing natural chemicals that improve your mood and make you feel happier, being fitter opens the door to a more active lifestyle and do more to help your mental health.

Exercise and physical activity can provide something worthwhile in your life. Something that you really enjoy, that gives you a goal to aim for and a sense of purpose.

On the farm we are out in all weathers, mending, fixing and building things- dry stone walling, basic woodwork, digging, fixing, improving repairing and conserving.

Here are a few of the benefits:

  • Gain life and social skills
  • Less tension, stress and mental fatigue
  • a natural energy boost
  • improved sleep
  • less anger or frustration

  • a sense of achievement
  • focus in life and motivation
  • less anger or frustration
  • a healthy appetite
  • better social life
  • have fun!

We aim to help you feel valued – and value yourself for what you can do, not what challenges you have.

Leading an active life, working with others for a purpose can help raise self-worth and improve confidence.
